sturdy travelling trunk made from wood that is covered with treated tan/green
canvas. The trunk is reinforced with wood, leather and metal bracings. There
are two leather handles, one on the right side and one on left side. It has
one metal lock and two metal latches and has two leather straps on the lower
part of the trunk that are meant to buckle. The inside lid is lined with
a rust colored cloth backed with paper, and the inside bottom is lined with
the same treated canvas as the outside. LouisAnfenger used this trunk when
he and his family went to Europe in 1890. (See also Louis Anfenger'sdiary
detailing his trip.) The lock box has engraved in a circle "Yale & Town,
MFG Co, Stamford Conn USA". There are two stickers on left side lower panel:
one is oval shaped in red and tan, (the only legible word is "Paris") and
the other is a square blue on white stating "Union Transfer Co., Baggage
checked at hotels and residences, quick service careful handling, 165 Stevenson
St.
Bet Palace Hotel & Third St. San Francisco CAL., Telephone Pri. Ex. 83." There
are six stickers on the right side. One sticker is an oval in red, tan and
black that is sideways and states "Coln am Rhein; Hotel du Nord, vormals
J. Friedrich, einziges Hotel I. Ranges am Central-Banhof." Below that sticker
is a red and tan rectangular sticker placed upside-down, (the only legible
word is "Bruxelles"). The last four stickers are all black on tan and state "639
Paris, Paris vis Quevy." Below the group of stickers is hand lettered in
black ink in capital letters "ANFENGER, DENVER." |
