Penrose Library currently has a trial to Proquest’s Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive. This database features the full text of essential trade magazines for film, broadcasting, music, and theater published in the United States and the United Kingdom during the twentieth century. Core titles include Variety (1905-2000), Billboard (1894-2000), Broadcasting (1931-2000), and The Stage (1880-2000). Music trade magazines are represented by New Musical Express (1946-2000), Melody Maker (1926-2000), and specialized music genre titles like Rave (1964-1970), The Beat (1982-2000), and Mixmag (1983-2000). In addition, several consumer and fan magazines round out the collection, from Picturegoer (1911-1960) to Musician (1976-1999). Although not all of the titles have been added to the database at this point, once complete the archive will provide a rich resource for studying twentieth-century film, music, and theater history.
The magazines have been scanned from cover to cover, with indexing that includes articles, covers, advertisements, and reviews. With the advanced search interface, you can conduct a keyword search in a specific field or across all fields, or limit your results by date range, journal subject (e.g., Communications—Television and Cable, Motion Pictures, Music, Theater), document type (e.g., advertisement, illustration, news, review, statistics/data report), document feature (e.g., graphs, photographs, table), and country of publication (United States and United Kingdom only). A keyword search on the stage and film actor Ralph Fiennes, for example, retrieved 302 hits, representing a mix of theater reviews, news articles, feature articles, photographs, and advertisements from such sources as The Stage, Screen International, Back Stage, and The Stage and Television Today.
The trial to Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive will last through June 8, 2012. We welcome your feedback!
