Penrose Prepares for the Debate

Monday, September 24th, 2012

Penrose Library, like the rest of campus, is preparing for the Presidential Debate next Wednesday, October 3.  To maintain the greatest possible access for library users, we plan to remain open Tuesday October 2nd until midnight and to reopen at 8:00am on Thursday October 4th.  These hours are subject to change, so please refer to our website (library.du.edu) and hours page for the latest information.  More information about campus closures and transportation issues can be found on the DU Debate page.

To celebrate this momentous occasion for our campus, Penrose Library has created two displays.  The first is a book and DVD display in Penrose@Driscoll titled U.S. Elections 2012: The American Political Environment.  Read more about these materials on our blog and our display web page.   All materials on display can be checked out.

The second is a display of materials from the library’s Special Collections that centers around visits by former U.S. Presidents to the DU Campus.  The debate October 3rd marks the fourth time a sitting president has visited the University of Denver campus.  Eight presidents in all have visited DU at some point – either before, during, or after their presidency. These were Taft, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, and Obama.  The display of materials about these visits is in the Ritchie Center Concourse and will be up through early January.

Finally, we are posting Presidential trivia to our Facebook page.  Check it out today!

How did Extended Hours work for YOU?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Right before finals, Penrose was the place to be. We have plenty of seats, which helped everyone find a favorite place to study — we had over 30% more students studying in the library before spring break than last year!

The printers were going strong: on the busiest day, the printers near the Research Center produced almost 17,000 pieces of paper.

We added electrical outlets on the first floor, so you can plug in your laptop.

UTS added wireless nodes so your laptop and your iPhone can get on the network.

Librarians were taking extra appointments in the Research Center so your papers could be turned in on time and with great quality. The Writing Center was really busy, but not too busy to help YOU!

All these reasons to study in Penrose created a dilemma on Wednesday, March 11 — when it was time to close, there were still 300 students working in the building! Zarin Xavier, the evening desk supervisor, made the call after consulting with the library administration, and the library staff stayed open all night for you! When Zarin made the announcement — there were actually CHEERS – out loud, no whispering! Students sitting on the upper level ran down to the desk to say thanks! We’d also like to say thanks to Zarin, and Jennifer Everson for losing sleep…

We quickly changed our schedules (this is not easy to do, by the way) and stayed open 24 hours for the rest of finals. We’d like to thank all the library staff who stayed up all night, and also the UTS lab staff for their part in helping us to stay open. We will be looking at our use numbers to figure out what we should do next quarter before finals.

In the meantime, come on in – it’s probably a great idea to avoid that pre-finals stress, and we can help you with that —

Hope you are having a great spring break.

We would like to congratulate the Ski Team for winning their 21st NCAA skiing national championship.  We also wish the hockey team luck at the WCHA final five tournament.

During spring break, the library will be open from Monday through Thursday from 8:00am till 8:00pm, Friday from 8:00am till 5:00pm, Saturday from 1:00-5:00pm, and Sunday from 1:00pm till Midnight.

Don’t forget, classes begin bright and early on Monday morning, March 22nd.  The hours for Penrose will adjust accordingly.
