Introducing Digital DU!

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

Penrose Library is pleased to announce the launch of Digital DU, an updated version of the University of Denver’s digital repository.  A digital repository is the place where we store digital items – images, documents, video, audio and more – that are important to DU and our community, things we want to keep around for generations.  The digital repository contains items from Special Collections, from departments on campus, and items that support student and faculty research.  The repository also includes many documents relating to people, places, and events in the history of Denver, Colorado, and the American West.

Digital DU replaces the previous repository, PEAK Digital, with several exciting new features and collections.

Collections include:

  • Art images
  • Maps
  • Historic and contemporary photographs of Denver and DU
  • DU publications
  • Oral histories
  • Theses, dissertations, and other, student publications
  • Faculty publications such as reprints, preprints, and conference presentations

New features include:

  • Improved keyword and faceted searching, including full-text searching of documents
  • The ability to bring together items on a topic using hyperlinked subject terms
  • Better viewing capabilities for all format types, including video, audio, and documents

Digital DU is growing!  Expect to see additions to the digital repository over time as we add more items created by DU faculty and students.

If you are looking to help supplement your research, are looking for specific DU or Denver people, or would like to browse some interesting documents and images, visit Digital DU at https://digitaldu.coalliance.org/.

20th-Century American Newspapers

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

Penrose Library has recently acquired 20th-Century American Newspapers, Series 1-3. This Readex database of digital historical newspapers begins coverage in 1923 (when America’s Historical Newspapers ends) and extends it through the twentieth century into the 1980s and 1990s. Series 1-3 comprises the following regional titles:

The Times-Picayune (New Orleans, Louisiana; 1923-1988)

The Plain Dealer (Cleveland, Ohio; 1923-1991)

The Oregonian (Portland, Oregon; 1923-1987)

Press-Register (Mobile, Alabama; 1970-1992)

The Seattle Times (Seattle, Washington; 1923-1984)

The Times (Trenton, New Jersey; 1923-1993)

The Springfield Republican (Springfield, Massachusetts; 1923-1946) and The Springfield Union (Springfield, Massachusetts; 1947-1987)

The Dallas Morning News (Dallas, Texas; 1923-1984)

The Augusta Chronicle (Augusta, Georgia; 1923-1993)

These newspapers are cross-searchable on the America’s Historical Newspapers platform, either as a separate set (20th-Century American Newspapers), or in tandem with the Early American Newspapers (1690-1922) series and the Hispanic American Newspapers (1808-1980).

20th-Century American Newspapers can be found by title in the library catalog, or listed under the “Databases” tab, in the “Newspapers (Historical)>Also Useful” category.
