E-readers and e-books

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Penrose Library subscribes to a wide variety of electronic books, and many of these can be downloaded to e-readers.  We’ve added instructions for transferring EBL, ebrary, and EBSCOhost e-books to iPad, NOOK, Kindle Fire, and Kobo e-readers in our E-Book Research Guide.

Safari Books Online requires an app, which can only be used with personal accounts and doesn’t work on academic accounts such as ours.

Books 24×7 has very few books that can be downloaded.

Trial to Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive

Monday, May 21st, 2012

Penrose Library currently has a trial to Proquest’s Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive. This database features the full text of essential trade magazines for film, broadcasting, music, and theater published in the United States and the United Kingdom during the twentieth century. Core titles include Variety (1905-2000), Billboard (1894-2000), Broadcasting (1931-2000), and The Stage (1880-2000). Music trade magazines are represented by New Musical Express (1946-2000), Melody Maker (1926-2000), and specialized music genre titles like Rave (1964-1970), The Beat (1982-2000), and Mixmag (1983-2000). In addition, several consumer and fan magazines round out the collection, from Picturegoer (1911-1960) to Musician (1976-1999). Although not all of the titles have been added to the database at this point, once complete the archive will provide a rich resource for studying twentieth-century film, music, and theater history.

The magazines have been scanned from cover to cover, with indexing that includes articles, covers, advertisements, and reviews. With the advanced search interface, you can conduct a keyword search in a specific field or across all fields, or limit your results by date range, journal subject (e.g., Communications—Television and Cable, Motion Pictures, Music, Theater), document type (e.g., advertisement, illustration, news, review, statistics/data report), document feature (e.g., graphs, photographs, table), and country of publication (United States and United Kingdom only). A keyword search on the stage and film actor Ralph Fiennes, for example, retrieved 302 hits, representing a mix of theater reviews, news articles, feature articles, photographs, and advertisements from such sources as The Stage, Screen International, Back Stage, and The Stage and Television Today.

The trial to Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive will last through June 8, 2012.  We welcome your feedback!

Jewish American Historical Newspapers

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Penrose Library has purchased four Jewish-American historical newspapers from ProQuest:

American Hebrew and Jewish Messenger (1857-1922)

  • The American Hebrew was a weekly Jewish newspaper published in New York City. In 1903 it merged with the Jewish Messenger. The paper covered many topics of Jewish interest internationally. Many prominent Jewish writers and communal workers in the United States have been contributors to its pages.

American Israelite (1854-1922)

  • The American Israelite is the longest-running English-language Jewish newspaper still published in the United States. The newspaper’s two goals were to spread the principles of Reform Judaism, and to keep American Jews in touch with Jewish affairs and their religious identity.

Jewish Advocate (1905-1990)

  • The Jewish Advocate serves as a primary source of news and information as well as a forum for discussion and debate, providing lines of communication uniting the community and supporting the efforts aimed at reinvigorating and broadening Jewish religious and cultural life.

Jewish Exponent (1887-1990)

  • The Jewish Exponent has carried news of developments in Israel, efforts to rescue Jews the world over from repressive regimes, and the ever-expanding role of Jews in American public life. Along the way, it has garnered honors each year from the American Jewish Press Association for excellence in Jewish journalism for its news, features, reviews and commentary.
