Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Regarding the on-going move of Penrose Library, please note the following changes in progress this week:

  • Library services, books, and materials have moved out of the building.  The move remains on schedule, and everything will be out by July 12, 2011.
  • Penrose Library continues all library services 24 hours a day, 5 days a week at its interim location, Penrose@Driscoll in the north part of the Driscoll Student Center, just west of the Penrose Library.
  • People wanting to return books may continue to use the outside book drop at Penrose Library through July 5.  Library books and materials can also be returned to the Circulation Desk located in Penrose@Driscoll, which is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week (full hours).  In the next few weeks, we will add drive-up book drops at both the north and south sides of Driscoll.  People wanting to renew books should visit Penrose@Driscoll or renew online via View Account.

  • Penrose Library Special Collections and Archives will move to Aspen Hall 2nd Floor North on Wednesday, June 29. Please schedule a research appointment to request materials during this transitional time.

  • For help with personal computers and equipment, visit the UTS Help Desk at 2100 South High St., located on the southeast corner of High and Evans Streets.
  • All Penrose Library phone numbers, mailing addresses, and e-addresses will remain the same during the building project.

As always it is possible to request books and other items using the “Request It” button in the on-line Library catalog record: http://library.du.edu.

Penrose@Driscoll Now Open!

Monday, June 20th, 2011

The temporary Penrose Library, Penrose@Driscoll, opens today, June 20, and will be the home of most library services for the duration of the building project.  Visit Penrose@Driscoll in the Driscoll Ballroom for Circulation, Document Delivery, Course Reserves, the Research Center, the Writing Center, and the computer lab.  Penrose@Driscoll is your place to study and access library services during the renovation.

While the Penrose Library building will be closed for renovation starting on June 20, a few services such as Quick Copy, Special Collections and Archives, and the Center for Teaching and Learning, will remain in the building for a few weeks.  Patrons needing to access these services should follow posted signs to an alternate entrance.  All library services and materials will be out of Penrose Library by July 12, 2011.

Of course, as always, it is still possible to request books and other items using the “Request It” button in the online catalog (use the Find Books and More search).

For continuing updates about the library building project, please see the library home page http://library.du.edu.  If you still have questions, click the “Ask Us” button on the library home page to find all the ways to contact us.

We look forward to seeing you at Penrose@Driscoll!

Book Displays Celebrate Libraries and Jazz

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

These are the last two book displays for the Penrose Library this year.

We celebrate our collection of jazz materials.  Come check out the books and DVDs which cover Jazz in all of its various forms and styles.  The collection is to the right of the Research Center.

Penrose Library, Moving Forward: A Tribute to Libraries

For the final book display in the old Penrose Library building, we put together a tribute to libraries.  Check out materials on the many facets of academic librarianship; view photos of some of the most beautiful and groundbreaking libraries in the world; and learn some of the basics of library science.  We say farewell to the old building, and welcome the new and exciting changes to come. We are looking forward to a bright future for Penrose Library! This collection is across from the Research Instruction Room.

Dissertations From Other Institutions

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Dissertations in the “old days”.

Not so long ago, when users wanted a dissertation from another university, only two options were available: 1) purchase a copy through UMI Dissertation Express (http://disexpress.umi.com/); or 2) borrow a copy through interlibrary loan, a process that could take 4-6 weeks and might entail reading microfilm.

Dissertations through Penrose Library.

Now, because of our subscription to Dissertations and Theses: Full Text, we are able to provide full text access to most doctoral dissertations from 1980 to present. Over 90% of the indexed dissertations have online full text (a few universities have chosen not to participate in this program).

How to Access online Dissertations.

1) Go to our database list (http://library.du.edu/site/about/databases.php) and click the “Dissertations” link. You will find the Dissertations and Theses: Full Text link there.

2) Search Summon (http://library.du.edu/site/about/databases.php)

You can restrict Summon results by clicking the “Dissertation” box in the Summon Results:
