University Archives joins Athletics for 2010 Hall of Fame

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Penrose Library faculty demonstrate the University's digital repository to football alums at the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Penrose Library faculty and staff joined DU Athletics in welcoming the 13th Athletic Hall of Fame class at the October 14 ceremony at the Ritchie Center.  University Archives (which is located in Penrose Library) manned a table with vintage hockey bumper stickers, pennants, media guides, and even Denver Boone’s (mascot) head. Staff were also on hand to show event attendees the university’s digital repository, which contains thousands of historical DU photographs, press releases, and other materials that represent the depth and breadth of DU’s athletics history.

“The University Archives is the university’s collective memory – we preserve and make available the original records that document what DU was. These records can tell us a lot about who we are now – how we started as a small private seminary in 1864 and became a ‘great private university dedicated to the public good’,” said Kate Crowe, who manages the cataloging and digitization of the University Archives. “As a bonus, they’re a lot of fun!”

DU’s Athletic Hall of Fame was created to honor, pay tribute to, and perpetuate the memory of those individuals who, either through participation, support or interest, have made outstanding contributions in the field of intercollegiate athletics and who have helped to bring recognition, honor, distinction and excellence to the University of Denver.

This year’s honorees include: the 1968-69 hockey team, Gordon Cooper (1948-52 and 1956, football, baseball, track and field), Sara Fadenrecht (1995-98, women’s basketball), Carlene Petersen Chrisman (1975-84, women’s tennis), and Dr. Nancy Sampson (special individual category).
