Does Penrose Library have textbooks?

Monday, December 12th, 2011

While Penrose Library doesn’t specifically purchase textbooks when they are assigned for classes at DU, many books required for classes are already in the library collections.  Search for books on the Books and More tab of the library’s homepage.

To provide all students access to course textbooks, many professors choose to place a print copy (the library’s or their own) of course texts on Course Reserves at the library. These items can be checked out at the Penrose@Driscoll Access Services Desk for a limited loan period.

Students may also use Prospector to request books from other libraries.  Keep in mind that other libraries generally assign a three week loan period with one renewal, which may not be enough time for students in a ten week course.

Feel free to contact the Research Center (303-871-2905, research-help@du.edu, IM/chat) for assistance in searching for copies of assigned course texts at Penrose, on Course Reserves, or from another library through Prospector.

Where are the E-Reserves?

Friday, March 12th, 2010

The electronic reserves, or E-Reserves are materials placed on hold by a professor or instructor for use by students in his or her class.  E-reserves can be found on the course reserves section of the website; you will need the course password in order to access E-reserves from the library website.

You can also access E-reserves from webCentral.  Once you have logged in select the “Resources” tab and then select “Electronic Course Reserves” from the Penrose Library box found in the middle of the page.  Course passwords are not required when accessing E-reserves this way.

Traditional print reserves are kept at the Circulation & Reserve desk and can be checked out in 2 hour increments.

How can I find out what is on Reserve?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

You can perform a search of many of our course reserves by using the Course Reserves link under the “Student” tab. Many faculty have started providing electronic reserves to their students. (You will get a password for the readings.) For traditional print reserve readings, you can also search either by your instructor’s name or by course number. Your search will then take you to a listing of items placed on reserve by your instructor, and will give you a unique identifying number which Reserves staff will use to retrieve the item, along with the status of the item in question. If you have more questions, please ask the staff at the circulation desk.
