This collection traces the Judd family construction activities that began with Abraham Judelowitz who arrived in Denver, Colorado in the 1880s and later became a well-known developer and contractor. He was instrumental in the construction of the first Beth haMedrosh Hagodol Synagogue (BMH) and was followed in the family business by his son Samuel, and grandson Edmond (E.) James Judd. The records focus on the Judd Construction Company, founded in 1949 by E. James Judd and incorporated in 1960. The Judd family was an important one in the Colorado Jewish and general community. Family members were prominent in the construction of a number of significant Denver buildings such as the Gaylord Street BMH building, additions to the Jewish Community Center, and restoration of the Molly Brown House. In addition, the three generations of Judd men were active in the leadership of local civic and Jewish organizations.

Scope and Content

This collection contains records of the Judd companies and personal papers of its principals. The materials in this collection primarily relate to the operation of the Judd Construction Company from 1949 through 1991 and concentrate on the construction industry in Denver, Colorado. The collection includes legal documents, advertising, financial statements, checkbooks, bids on construction jobs, blueprints, correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, photographs, audiotape, appointment books, and scrapbooks.
