| SERIES DESCRIPTION |
| This collection consists of materials that relate
to the writing of the book Exploring Jewish Colorado. It includes
the following series: |
| Correspondence (March 20, 1991-February
2, 1992; nd) -- Box 1, File Folder 1 |
| Includes personal correspondence to and from Phil
Goodstein, bids from printers, letters regarding publishing, and permissions.
The items are arranged in chronological order in keeping with the order
of creation of the book, Exploring Jewish Colorado. Undated items
are located in the front of the folder. Note: Some portions of drafts of
the book related to specific organizations are attached to correspondence
within this series. |
| Questionnaires (July 30, 1991-August 30,
1991; nd) -- Box 1, File Folders 2-3 |
| Includes questionnaires used to obtain information
from various organizations for possible inclusion in the book. Since most
of the organizations are located in the Denver area, two sub-series were
created: Denver and Other. These items are arranged alphabetically by organization
name within each sub-series. Note: Printed materials from some organizations
are attached to the surveys. |
| Secondary Sources (May 5, 1865-January 1992;
nd) -- Box 1, File Folders 4-6 |
| Includes pamphlets, brochures, newspaper clippings,
photocopies of articles, etc. about people and organizations, and is arranged
like the surveys -- alphabetically by name within each sub-series of Denver
and Other. The newspaper clippings cover the Friedman, Guldman, and Londoner
families, Temple Emmanuel and other Denver Jewish churches, and Jewish society
news. This series also includes a published copy of the article, "The Jews
of Capitol Hill," by Phil Goodstein, along with several drafts of the article. |
| Drafts (December 12, 1991; nd)
-- Box 2, File Folders 1-7; Box 3, File Folders 1-18 |
Includes drafts of the book or portions of it, with
editorial comments and notes. Each draft represents a different stage of
completion of Exploring Jewish Colorado. It is probable that these
drafts were created between February 22, 1991 (date of creation of the folder
titled, "Jewpaper" on the computer disk) and March 1992 (date of publication
of the book). Drafts that are intact or cover several areas of Colorado
are in individual folders and arranged in an order that attempts to recreate
the order that Dr. Goodstein worked on the book. Incomplete drafts that
cover specific organizations or locations in Colorado are arranged in folders
by location within the State in accordance with the arrangement of the book,
which divides Colorado into the following locations:
- Denver
- Pioneering Agricultural Colonies
- Trinidad
- Pueblo
- Colorado Springs
- Northeastern Colorado
- Grand Junction
- Central City
- Leadville
- Cripple Creek
- Southwestern Colorado
- Mountain Communities
In addition, drafts that are limited to the table of contents, introduction,
bibliography, and index are located in folders with these headings. Note:
Correspondence to and from John Livingston has been kept with the draft
to which it was attached. |
| Galley Proofs (undated) -- Box
4, File Folders 1-5 |
| Includes several complete or mostly complete galley
proofs with editorial comments and notes, arranged in separate folders.
As with the drafts, the probable dates are between February 22, 1991 and
March 1992. They are also arranged in an order that attempts to recreate
the order of work on the book. |
| Photographic Images and Illustrations (1891-1981;
nd) -- Box 4, File Folder 6 |
| Includes one set of photocopies of photographs and
illustrations that are in the book. |
| Computer Diskette (August 31, 1990-February
21, 1992) -- Box 4, File Folder 7 |
| Includes one 3 1/2-inch computer diskette and a
printout of the list of folders on the disk. The diskette requires Microsoft
Word 1.x-5.x for MAC to read the files. A folder titled "Jewpaper" was created
on February 22, 1991, and appears to contain subfolders of the Colorado
locations that are used in the book. The printout of folders on the diskette
indicates the diskette may also contain material not specifically related
to Exploring Jewish Colorado. |
