Scope and Content

This collection contains art historian Lauretta Dimmick's research material for American Sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Volume I: a Catalogue of Works by Artists Born before 1865. Published in 1999, this is the first volume of a two-volume set, comprising the definitive catalogue of the Museum's collection of American sculpture. The book was edited by Thayer Tolles, assistant curator of American painting and sculpture at the Museum. Dimmick collaborated with Tolles and Donna J. Hassler on the catalogue portion of the book.

The collection contains a variety of biographical and bibliographic information on each of the American sculptors represented, as well as information pertaining to each artist's works. A number of major sculptors of the nineteenth century are represented in the collection, including Frederic Remington, Augustus Saint Gaudens, Harriet Hosmer, William Rimmer, and William Morris Hunt.

Dimmick, an independent art historian, joined the project in the mid-1980s, while Lewis I. Sharp was directing the project. Dimmick graduated from the University of Denver in 1976, and received her doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh in 1986. Her dissertation was entitled A Catalogue of the Portrait Busts and Ideal Works Of Thomas Crawford (1813? - 1857), American Sculptor In Rome.
