Henry Augustus Buchtel was one of the University of Denver's most
distinguished chancellors. He served as chancellor from 1899 to
1920, a time of growth and prosperity for the University. During
his tenure the University's debt was paid and the endowment was
increased. Four new buildings were built on the University Park
campus--the Carnegie Library, the Gymnasium, the Science Building,
and the Memorial Chapel. Buchtel was also a prominent figure in
Colorado politics, serving as Governor of the state from 1907 to
1909.
Scope and Content
The Buchtel collection consists primarily
of Buchtel's correspondence and a collection of scrapbooks. Series
I of the collection includes extensive correspondence between Buchtel
and William G. Evans, son of Colorado Governor and University of
Denver founder John Evans, and long-time University Board of Trustees
chairman. Also included in Series I are correspondence between Buchtel
and presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Series
II consists of a very thorough collection of University-related
administrative correspondence for the years 1900 to 1903. Series
III contains general correspondence, arranged chronologically. A
calendar for a portion of the correspondence in Series I and III
is also available. The calendar is arranged alphabetically by correspondent
other than Buchtel. However, all the letters are now arranged chronologically,
with the exception of the Evans, Roosevelt, Taft, and Crook correspondence,
which is foldered separately.
Series IV contains scrapbooks, which
cover the years 1873 to 1925. They contain primarily newspaper clippings,
letters, and event and souvenir programs. |
