How to Donate Books to Penrose Library

We have two ways of receiving book gifts.

If you have books for the Women’s Library Association (WLA) book sale:

The WLA is always looking for books to sell at their book sale; all proceeds go to the library. If you are interested in giving the WLA books that you no longer need, on any topic, and which might sell well (cookbooks, books on health, current topics, history, politics, biography, fiction and literature, etc.) contact Barb Powers. In most cases, you will arrange a time to drop them off at the library’s loading dock (east side of building.) You may also arrange for a volunteer to pick books up from your home or office. All books donated through the WLA are checked against the Penrose Library’s holdings, and if titles are appropriate for the library’s collection, they are cataloged and added.

If you have a scholarly collection to donate to the Penrose Library:

It is always helpful to include a list of the books that you’re donating, however; this is not a requirement. Should you provide a contents list, the list should include the title, author, publisher and year of publication. Please mark boxes of books with your name, address and phone number so the Library may thank you for your gift.

All titles will be checked against current library inventory and duplicates will be given to the Women’s Library Association for the book sale. All proceeds go to the library.

It is important to know that you can personally value your gift-in-kind up to $4,999.99. An appraiser, at your own expense, must value any gift of $5,000 or more. Our Special Collections Department can provide you with the names and phone numbers of local appraisers.

We have staff available to come to your home if you believe that your large collection may be of special scholarly value to the library. Please contact Michael Levine Clark, Coordinator of Collections Management, Penrose Library to arrange an appointment, to drop off donations, or with any other questions.
